Dhul-Qarnayn was not proud, cruel, or greedy. He had no interest in hoarding gold or boasting in glittering palaces. Instead, Allah blessed him with immense knowledge, a powerful army, and everything he needed to succeed. Dhul-Qarnayn sets out toward the far west

A Great King Begins His Journey#

One bright morning, King Dhul-Qarnayn stood atop a windswept hill, gazing out toward the distant horizon.

He turned to his companions and said, “Allah has blessed us with strength and ability, and we must only ever use it to do what pleases Him.”

His soldiers smiled. They knew their leader well—he was a king who championed good wherever he stepped.

With flags fluttering, the caravan set out. Strong riders, swift horses, and sturdy camels loaded with supplies marched for days over deserts, valleys, and rocky trails, until they reached the farthest reaches of the West.

There, looking out over the vast sea at dusk, the setting sun appeared to dip into dark, murky waters—a breathtaking sight described in the Quran.

By the shore lived a community of local people.

Allah had placed authority in Dhul-Qarnayn's hands, presenting him with a test of how he would govern.

Justice by the Setting Sun#

The people of the land gathered before him, some living peacefully while others caused trouble.

Dhul-Qarnayn looked upon them with calm wisdom, taking his time to judge thoughtfully.

Then he spoke in a clear, steady voice:

“Whoever does wrong and causes harm will face fair justice here, and will return to their Lord for the ultimate account. But whoever believes and does good will receive a wonderful reward, and we will treat them with gentle kindness.”

The honest folk breathed a sigh of relief. Everyone could see that this king would never let injustice stand.

Rich or poor, mighty or weak—it didn't matter to Dhul-Qarnayn. What mattered was how they acted.

He stayed among them, bringing peace and resolving disputes, before continuing his great quest.

Journey to the Rising Sun#

Dhul-Qarnayn and his men marched eastward, traveling until they reached the farthest edge of the East.

There he found a simple people living under the vast open sky, with no trees, caves, or shelters to shield them from the blazing sunrise.

He looked upon them with warmth and compassion, never mocking their simple way of life.

He knew that outer differences do not make anyone better than anyone else—what truly counts in the sight of Allah is faith and good deeds.

He taught them, guided them with kindness, ensured justice among them, and then marched onward.

At every milestone, he bowed his head in gratitude, knowing that success only comes with Allah's help.

Dhul-Qarnayn arrives at the land near Gog and Magog

Between the Two Mountains#

After a grueling trek through steep, rugged passes, Dhul-Qarnayn arrived in a valley nestled between two immense mountains.

The cliffs towered high into the clouds, the paths were narrow, and the people living there were trembling with fear.

Some villagers stepped forward to meet Dhul-Qarnayn. They spoke an unfamiliar tongue, and it took great patience and effort to understand their plea.

Once they found a way to communicate, the villagers cried out:

“O Dhul-Qarnayn! A destructive tribe called Gog and Magog terrorize our land, raiding our homes and terrifying our children. Could we pay you a tribute if you build a strong barrier between us and them?”

Dhul-Qarnayn looked at their worried faces with deep sympathy.

He smiled warmly and reassured them:

“The strength and blessings my Lord has given me are far better than any treasure you could offer. I need no payment! Just lend me your help, and together we will build an unbreakable wall.”

A wave of joy swept through the valley.

Here was a leader who didn't want their gold—he only wanted to protect them.

Building the Mighty Barrier#

Without wasting a moment, everyone set to work together.

The villagers hauled enormous blocks of solid iron.

Strong men lifted the heavy loads with all their might.

Energetic youths organized the work and kept the supplies moving.

Even the children cheered and watched in awe as the great structure began to rise.

Dhul-Qarnayn pointed to the deep gap between the two mountain walls and called out:

“Stack the iron blocks right here!”

For days and days they labored, stacking heavy iron until the barrier reached level with the mountain peaks.

Then Dhul-Qarnayn called out:

“Blow the fire!”

The workers pumped the roaring bellows, fanning the flames until the massive iron glowed bright crimson hot.

Next, Dhul-Qarnayn ordered molten copper to be poured over the glowing iron, fusing everything into a rock-solid, impenetrable wall.

What a magnificent sight it was!

It wasn't just a wall—it was a masterpiece built through teamwork, sincere faith, and hard work.

A Humble Heart Gives Thanks#

When the barrier was complete, the raiders tried desperately to scale its slippery, towering sides.

But they couldn't climb it.

They brought heavy tools to dig through it.

Yet they couldn't pierce it.

The villagers stood before the towering wall, cheering with tears of relief and joy.

Their fear was gone at last; they were safe and sound in their homes.

They rushed to thank Dhul-Qarnayn, showering him with praise and heartfelt prayers.

Yet Dhul-Qarnayn did not boast or puff out his chest.

Instead, he looked up to the heavens with deep humility and declared:

“This is a mercy from my Lord!”

He knew that all success belongs to Allah alone, and that true power isn't an excuse for pride, but a duty to serve others.

He then explained to them that the wall would stand strong until Allah's appointed time at the end of days, when Allah's true promise will come to pass.

An Unforgettable Journey#

Having brought peace and safety to the valley, Dhul-Qarnayn prepared to depart.

He took no bags of gold.

He gathered no sparkling treasures.

He asked for no grand palace or fancy reward.

He carried away only the people's love and their grateful prayers.

Every village he passed was a reminder that true greatness is not how much power you possess, but how wisely you use it.

A true leader defends the defenseless, upholds justice, and constantly thanks Allah for His blessings.

For generations to come, the villagers told tales around the fire of the righteous King Dhul-Qarnayn, who arrived in their darkest hour, rescued them, and moved on with the humblest of hearts.

Lessons from Dhul-Qarnayn#

One evening, a young boy sat beside his father and asked:

“Dad, why did Allah share the story of Dhul-Qarnayn with us in the Quran?”

His father smiled gently and replied:

“Because it holds wonderful lessons for our lives, son.”

“Like what?” the boy asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.

His father explained:

“We learn that our gifts and abilities come from Allah, and we must always use them for good.”

He added, “We learn that fairness matters most, and a good leader never treats anyone unfairly.”

“And,” his father continued, “we learn that teamwork makes big dreams possible—without the villagers working together, that great wall could never have been built.”

The boy beamed and added:

“And we shouldn't get boastful when we do something great! We should remember to say, ‘This is a mercy from my Lord!’”

His father nodded proudly:

“Spot on! Gratitude brings more blessings, and humility lifts a person's character.”

From that day on, whenever the boy helped someone or finished a difficult task, he remembered the noble king and said to himself:

“I will use my gifts to help others, and I will always thank Allah for everything.”

And so, the story of Dhul-Qarnayn remains a timeless jewel of the Quran, reminding young and old that faith, justice, teamwork, and humble gratitude are what truly make a person great.
